Should Web Hosts Block WordPress Plugins?

Plugins allow you to expand WordPress functionality, but many web hosts are starting to block or restrict certain plugins. Is this a good or bad thing?

WordPress Plugins and Flexibility

WordPress is an incredibly flexible platform for building websites and blogs. Its real power comes from the vast ecosystem of third-party plugins, which allow you to add everything from online shops and payment gateways to booking systems, forums, and backup tools.

It’s rare to find a WordPress site that doesn’t rely on at least one plugin to extend its functionality.

The Downside of Plugins

While plugins are powerful, they’re also one of the most common sources of problems. In our experience, a significant proportion of WordPress support queries relate directly to plugin issues.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of installing a plugin for everything. We’ve seen sites running dozens of plugins at once, sometimes including multiple plugins performing the same task. The result is usually poor performance, conflicts, and instability.

Because plugins are developed by third parties, quality and security can vary. Even reputable developers occasionally release updates that introduce bugs or vulnerabilities. The more plugins installed, the greater the potential risk.

Our Approach to Plugins at Hipposerve

Some hosting providers take a hard-line approach and block specific WordPress plugins outright. This often includes backup plugins, security plugins, or tools that consume significant server resources.

At Hipposerve, we take a more balanced view.

We do not prevent customers from installing plugins. However, we reserve the right to intervene where a plugin:

  • Poses a known or high security risk
  • Breaches our fair usage policy through excessive resource usage
  • Negatively impacts other customers on shared hosting

In these situations, we may temporarily disable the plugin and work with you to find a suitable solution. This may include optimisation, replacement, or recommending a more appropriate hosting plan.

Our full policy is outlined here: WordPress Plugin Policy.

Good Plugin Practice

Many plugins are perfectly legitimate and safe when used correctly. Older plugins may still be required for legacy sites or development work.

Before installing any plugin, we strongly recommend:

  • Only installing plugins you genuinely need
  • Removing plugins that are no longer in use
  • Keeping plugins updated wherever possible
  • Checking known vulnerabilities before installation

We’ve created a detailed guide covering this in more depth: WordPress Plugins – Everything You Need to Know.

Backup Plugins: A Special Case

Backup plugins deserve special mention. We do not block backup plugins, but they need to be used responsibly on shared hosting.

Backups are essential. They’re the safety net you hope you never need — but are incredibly valuable when something goes wrong.

Resource Usage and Scheduling

Backup plugins are resource-intensive. While they’re running, they can significantly slow down a website and place heavy load on the server.

If you use a backup plugin on shared hosting, you should:

  • Schedule backups no more than once per day
  • Run backups during off-peak hours (for example, overnight)

This helps ensure fair performance for all customers on the server.

Storing Backup Files Safely

Storing backup files on the same server as your website defeats the purpose of having a backup. If the server fails or your webspace is corrupted, those backups will be lost too.

Backup files should always be stored externally, such as:

  • Cloud storage services like Google Drive
  • Amazon S3 or other external storage providers
  • Secure local storage downloaded manually

Backup files also consume large amounts of disk space. On shared hosting, storing these files locally will breach fair usage limits.

For this reason, backup files are not permitted to be stored within shared hosting webspace. Automated systems may remove these files to protect server resources.

If you need to store backups locally on your hosting account, we recommend upgrading to a Hippo Business Pro or VPS plan.

In Summary

We believe customers should have the freedom to choose the plugins that suit their website and workflow.

That freedom comes with responsibility. Plugins must be secure, well-maintained, and appropriate for the hosting environment they’re used on.

On shared hosting, some plugins are simply better suited to higher-performance environments such as VPS or dedicated servers.

Our goal is not to restrict choice, but to protect performance, security, and fairness for all customers.
